Basically from the start.  I've associated CFA strength with better color since I began exploring CCD cameras in 2013 starting with the D200. See here:

Yes, these comments related to D200 CCD images. Notice that's completely concordant with what I said here earlier about old school CCD cameras like the D200 having flourished at a time when strong CFA's for high color fidelity were preferred.  These days weak CFA's are preferred for better high ISO performance.

I would say SMI can tell us a lot about the robustness of the CFA under different illuminants.


Fine, disagree.  At least I've described the logical rationale for why strong SMI scores for dual illuminants suggests better SMI scores for other illuminants.
