Sensor Cleaning can be a challenge

I have a Nikon D7000, which I absolutely love.  I bought it used and began to wonder if I had made a mistake in purchasing a used camera.  But with only 10,000 shutters I could not resist.
Of course the camera hadn't been serviced in quite some time, so the sensor was a filthy mess.  It took me 6 Photosol swabs and enough Eclipse to knock you out to get all the crap off this sensor.  I've only just recently gotten serious about digital slr only work, as I've shot film and scanned my negatives for the last 15 years.  Is it common for an imaging sensor to attract that much mess?  The camera is very clean otherwise, the body looks nearly new; the reason I suspected it needed cleaning was there were very faint translucent aberrations in images of a clear sky (images taken as a camera test).   How often should I be cleaning this camera out?  What can prevent some of the mess from getting into the camera?

So, all of you digital pros out there please shoot me an answer if you would.  Thanks in advance.

Jason
