I've always noticed that the SD14 is much "better" than it's predecessors as far as low level noise and blotching is concerned. However, like many things Sigma, that would appear to be only due to processing rather than any miraculous advance in the technology:

At left, basic conversion by FastStone (uses dcraw) reveals the truth at left. Meanwhile the SPP 5.5.3 output at right with both NRs at minimum is wonderfully smooth - in other words, there's serious under-cover stuff going on no matter what you select in the review window!
