Finished prints: Positive Photo paper vs. Laser Prints

This is my first post on dpreview and I am unsure if this is the right forum to initiate the thread.

I have been shooting digital photos for as long as I remember but have recently developed an interest in film photography after seeing the prints lying around in my parent's stuff.

I have shot a few rolls on 35mm film and handed them to a photo lab. The results were absolutely horrendous. I think the reason maybe that my camera (Canon A-1) has some sort of a light leak issue inside the body. However, another reason may be that the photo labs simply do not know / have the right tools to develop negatives and positives from a 35mm film anymore.

My Question: I want to understand the process of developing 35mm color film negatives and then exposing the negatives directly onto chemically dyed photo paper in various sizes including 8 X 10.

I want to know how does a 8 X 10 print which has been exposed through a negative onto chemically dyed paper compare to a 8 X 10 photo that has been printed through the best commercial grade printer available.
