Dream machine: What does your full-frame Sigma look like?
2

The Throwback Thursday article today regarding the SD1 prompted me to think about what kind of camera I would like to see Sigma produce in the full-frame space (if they ever do). The more I thought about it, the more I came to see the value in them retaining the DSLR design rather than the new mirrorless SDQ and SDQ H. Here’s what my full-frame Sigma would have:

· Twin-grip DSLR body like the D5 and 1D X – greater battery life for the power hungry sensor

· Weather-sealed magnesium alloy body – Foveon shines for landscape work, so give it some thick skin

· 1/8000 second shutter – needs to compete with other flagship full-frames

· Quad TRUE III processors, or Dual TRUE IV – the SDQ H is still a bit of a dog when it comes to processing time, 3 FPS on full-frame is going to take some serious power

· Usable ISO 800 – full-frame should afford a bit more breathing room for ISO sensitivity

· PDAF sensor with wide frame coverage and accurate 3D tracking – Foveon may be slow, but a dedicated PDAF sensor doesn’t have to be

· Dual XQD card slots – keeping the same pixel pitch as the SDQ H would result in 45.6MP of image resolution (from the blue layer), plus the additional 20.8MP combined from green and red channels; XQD is the only modern PCI media that can handle that throughput at 3FPS

· MSRP of $3499 – given how aggressively priced the SDQ H is, Sigma could potentially price this machine to compete with the D850 and 5D IV

That’s my full-frame Sigma dream machine anyway. What’s yours?
