How do you use AFC? I photographed a Cross Country race with mine Saturday. It was a brutally hot day and some of the runners were puking while others faltered. What I do is use AFC and the smallest focus area with short high speed bursts of about 5 shots. I find my keeper rate is in the 40-60% range for runners coming at me which is fine for my purposes. If I shoot longer bursts the camera AF fails so it's a case of knowing the limitations.

For single shots with AFS my success rate is much higher but my keeper total is less. What I mean is with a single shot AFS I get one good shot. If I shoot a short AFC burst of 5 shots I get 2-3 keepers.
