Is Canon the budget/value option?

Personally, I bought into Canon because it was cheaper to get refurbs with one year warranties, and even new lenses are mostly cheaper than counterparts from other brands. I still poke around because there's no pricing advantage going to Nikon, and no price or lens lineup advantage with Sony. The main argument against people switching to Nikon, Sony, etc, is the cost, not performance. The most exciting news for Canon bodies has been the refresh of the "entry level" full frame and the second edition of the tiny SL, one step above the T6 in pricing. Canon has reduced inventory and build complexity by putting the same vari-angle screen on multiple models, the same 24 mp sensor on new aps-c bodies for the last couple years, the same aps-c autofocus array is on the T7i through to the 6D mk 2, and the SL2 uses the same af as the not quite old as dirt SL1.

Canon is the market leader, but the ilc market is shrinking, and making a profit is proving hard, just look at the competition. Does Canon have an option outside of cost cutting and homogenization in their stills camera segment? They have other business units, and those are receiving new funding for new growth, but cameras are on the decline. Does Canon not build bodies like the a9 or D850 because there's no way to be profitable by giving the photographer a lot of features? The 6D mk 2 launched at a price cheaper than the 6D, and that's without inflation adjustment. You could get the Pentax K-1 for less than a 6D mk 2, but with the lens lineup, is it better value?

Will Canon move beyond value positioning, or is that where the industry must naturally progress as it moves from maturity to decline? Will the next 1D or 5D garner the interest of the internet, or will it reside at the prosumer and below level with little more than lip service to the higher end?
