[Nikon D750 et. al.] Why does the wireless remote control mode keep switching OFF?

I will start by stating what you probably already know, to set the context of my question.

I own an ML-L3 wireless remote control for my Nikon D750.

Yay "Nikon"!

When you first fire that remote control at the camera, nothing happens.
That's perfectly normal, since the remote control mode is OFF, by default.

You have to go into the right menu to specify what you want, first in the Photo Shooting Menu:

Photo Shooting Menu - Remote Control Mode

And from there, you can specify which mode you want:

Cool, you can choose between 3 different modes!

Now, here is my question: why does it keep turning itself off automatically?
- If you turn off your camera then on again, the mode is off
- If you wait long enough for the camera to switch to sleep mode, your mode is off
Couldn't we have that info stored in the "hard" memory of the camera somehow?

I would like to know what you guys think of that: is it a feature you're ok with, or are you as crossed as me?
Thank you!
