Native ISO

In this week's Amateur Photographer magazine here in the UK there is an article by Martin Evening (p 29) in which he states that Nikon camera sensors usually have a native ISO of 160 whilst with Canon it is usually 100. I quote "So although lower IS settings may be available the capture quality won't be as good as shooting at the native ISO setting. Whenever you need to increase the ISO, it is best to select a setting that is a multiple of the native ISO. Therefore Nikon users should generally consider selecting ISO settings of 160, 320, 640 and so on, while Canon users should select 100, 200, 400 etc. "

This is new to me - is it all correct ?
