The need for more dynamic range in viewing images
1

There is another thread in this forum asking if we need more dynamic range, but it only considers image capture; i.e. the dynamic range of cameras.

The real limitation is in viewing the images. Prints typically have 6 or 7 stops of dynamic range, while screens typically have only about two stops more. Both are well below the dynamic range of any half-way decent camera.

For me, improving the technology for viewing images is more important than getting cameras with more dynamic range. It would be a significant advance if viewing screens with, say, 12 stops of dynamic range were the norm instead of around 8 stops or so at present.

What do others think?
