Honeycomb grids and falloff

Lighting newbie here, wondering if a smarter person can confirm/clarify.

I recieved the Neewer Pro Speedlite Flash Accessories Kit yesterday (and, by the way, pretty spiffy for the money) and was messing around with the BD and the snoot; both of which have a honecomb grid accessory to accompany them.

What I seem to be seeing is that with both the BD and the snoot, the addition of the honeycomb grid seems to soften light falloff.

My question/issue is: why? I thought that the smaller the light source in relation to the subject the harsher the falloff. The honeycomb grids, by definition, focus the light which I thought was akin to making it smaller. Therefore, I would have expected the falloff using the grids to be harsher, not softer.

Clearly, I am confused. Can someone point out why?

Thanks!
