Nozzle Check every 48-58 hours may not prevent Pro-10 from running a purge cycle

I have lately been just running a nozzle check every 48 hours to keep my Canon Pro-10 from running a purge cycle, but it doesn't seem like it is working. After printing the nozzle check the printer does all kinds of "stuff" for quite a while. It sure does seem to include a purge cycle to me but I don't know how to tell based on the time and the sounds it makes.

How can I tell exactly what it is doing?
