Focus Near Infinity and Cloudy Skies

This is something of a beginner question but figure I'll ask my fellow Sony owners over here. Sony A7RII here.

I do a lot of sky photos, and I find myself having difficulty with autofocus quite naturally. A cloudy sky with little contrast will send autofocus seeking forever, and it's these clouds I want in focus.

So far I've tried -- focusing elsewhere than my shot on the sky, and then moving back after a focus lock. Looking for high contrast clouds to focus on. Setting autofocus zone to wide.

But if I zoom in a long lens it becomes especially difficult to impossible even with these helps. What else can I do? Any settings I'm missing I could change on the camera?

I prefer to use autofocus to manual focus as I have difficulty getting manual focus to precise sharpness.. just like the camera in these cases.
