Shooting in bright outdoor light

I have a hard time seeing my subject in bright daylight. This guy was munching on a bee I watched him catch in mid air. The branches were blowing in the wind which made it hard to keep in focus. I wish his head, eye, prey were in sharper focus, but this is the best I got. Is there a trick to seeing in bright light?

Actually now I'm realizing it isn't all completely in focus because of the DOF.  What aperture and shutter speed would have been more optimum?
