G3X face detection misfocusing

I use my G3X in the PASM modes with a single AF point with no problems. Recently a family member used my G3X in Auto mode, some shots were out of focus despite the AF confirming a lock. So I set it in P mode with face detection turned on, same problem, AF confirms a lock with a white square around the face but some shots are misfocused. There was only one face in the frame, filling half of the frame, and the person was too far away from the camera for this to be a minimum focus distance problem.

Anyone else experienced this with their G3X?
