I've run into similar exposure fluctuations with the center-weight mode on the a7ii. Bright (midday) hard light with deep shadow areas seem difficult to read consistently - at times. With certain other cameras, I can get a smooth transition in exposure latitude going from deep shadow to hot-spot. This seems to be handled differently with the a7ii metering. At any rate, with these kinds of lighting conditions, multi-mode seems to smooth out the wild swings.
