Help with settings for D7200

I was in a festival last Sunday. It was a beatiful day. But I missed some pictures again because of the failure in getting green dot.  Settings of D7200 were:

AF-C mode (I always set this mode for both stationay and mobile objects)

Continuous low speed release mode (CL)

AF-Area mode 9 pt

Used exclusviely Back button focusing (BBF).

a1: AF-C (priority selection) to "RELEASE"

a2: AF-S (Priority selection) to "FOCUS".

Since AF-C mode was set on my camera and "a1" was set to RELEASE, I could release the shutter to take pictures at any time. But the shutter was not responding. I could release the shutter only when sold green dot is visible in the view finder. I thought that setting of "a2" to FOCUS won't matter whether it was set to FOCUS or RELEASE because "a2" setting was applicable to AF-S mode. I might be wrong on this one. So I would like to go back to camera basic 101.

Mako advised to set "a2" to RELEASE in other thread.  But I thought that that is for AF-S mode.

My questions are how I should set for:

a1 and a2 settings under AF-C mode (for stationay and mobile targets) and

a1 and a2 settings under AF-S mode (for stationary targets).

Please enlighten me.  Thank you.
