The 24-240 could be the 24-105 you’ve been waiting for!

The 24-240 could be the 24-105 you’ve been waiting for!

Those are my unscientific findings in any case.

I just received my 70-300G after getting an attack of G.A.S. and wanted to see how the 24-240 compared to it over corresponding FLs.

Well, from 70 to 100 I would say very well indeed.

Is the 70-300 better? Yes. But IMHO not enough to make me feel I’m missing out on significant quality from 70-100 if I don’t have it with me.

Even at 150 and F11 the difference isn’t enormous, but by 200 the 70-300 certainly has a clear advantage.

Moral of the story, I would be skeptical that a new 24-105 is going to be significantly better than the 24-240 at those FLs. Maybe it’ll be a constant F4 which will make it nearly as heavy, but I would want to see a direct comparison before I gave up the 24-240 as an all-in-one travel lens.

Just my 2 cents. Thought some of you might be interested.

Photos taken on tripod, stabilization off, 5sec timer, same focus point.

f11 seems to be the best for 24-240 so that's what I used here except at 200.

24-240 on left, 70-300 on right

70mm f11                                                                  F8

100 f11                                                                      f8

150  both F11

200 f16                                                                       f11
