Tri-X film grain

I never did that much either. Probably 75% of the film I shot was Tri-X, with the rest being casual color snapshooting on vacations and such, using whatever Fuji color print film I could find cheap.

Was that 35mm? 35mm Tri-X made my skin crawl. All I could stand was Panatomic-X and I could hardly make good 8X10's from that. That's why I love digital.

Your tolerance for film grain must have been considerably less than mine.

In my film days I routinely printed to 11x14 from 35mm Tri-X without being offended by the very obvious grain structure. In fact I even had a selection of grain overlays to place on the paper while printing to introduce a similar "gritty" look at lesser magnifications.
