Help with scanning!

Hi everyone, new here. First post.

I do film photography and have the film scanned at a lab. I am entering a photography contest and the requirements (in an email response from the editorial team) are no more than 5000 and no less than 1200 pixels. Here's my response from the editor of the contest to my question about requirements:

'As for the resolution, the system can accept up to 5000. Also, the DPI doesn’t matter; the submissions are not for print. We simply need a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side.'

My lab scans in megabytes and I am challenged when it comes to this stuff. What do I tell them if I want the maximum quality?  I am assuming he means mean 5000 pixels as maximum, since he didn't specify it.

What is that in megabytes? And would I go slightly lower in the scan to take into consideration the  pixels editing will add?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa
