Wildlife in the Sequoia National Forest, California

I go to the Sequoia National Forest several times a year. Here are some photographs from recent trips.

1. California Mule Deer, Odocoileus hemionus

2.  Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodia

3.  Female Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos

4.  Male Ruddy Duck, Oxyura jamaicensis. They often swim with their tails up, like a rudder.

5.  California Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus beecheyi

6. Monarch, Danaus plexippus on Narrow-leaf Milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis. Milkweed is quite abundant in this area because of so much undisturbed land, unlike in urban areas, where the Monarch has trouble finding this plant which is necessary for its larvae.

7.  Large Milkweed Bug, Oncopeltis fasciatus

8.  Tarantula Hawk; Spider Wasp, Pepsis pallidolimbata, also a frequenter on Milkweed plants.
