The standard JPEG film simulation -- Provia -- simulates a slide film. Slide films are known for their hard shadows. You might want to try one of the PRO Neg simulations, especially PRO Neg Std. Also, you can soften the shadows with negative values of Shadow Tone.

(Classic Chrome is especially hard on shadows, and Velvia is downright brutal on them.)

Thanks for that. Yes OOC JPEG. The information is all there in the RAW files, lift it by only 1.5 stops and all the detail in the shadow is all there.

In Silkypix, PRO Neg Std does indeed bring a little more detail to the shadows, funnily enough the Sepia does it the best, so it must be all down to the JPEG algorithms to produce the best final image.
