Stories Untold

In recent thread about video, I raised a point about trying to tell stories when doing a video, which often requires a bit of preparation and planning; far more than what is usually required when it comes to photography. For me, storytelling is an important aspect of my photography and in fact it’s a vital complement for just about everything that I write or photograph.

This year, one of my projects was to do a series on my favourite local park, which I called A Year at Mossvale Park - 2017’. I’d been taking numerous photographs over the year, with a plan in mind as to how to put these into a series. It was to be a series based on the seasons, but it turned into a different story altogether because of an unexpected encounter in August, which is often the way with any storytelling.

I’d planned for one thing and then everything changed, but what I’d been doing kind of fell into place and the photographs that I’d taken earlier helped me to put the story together: https://australianimage.com.au/a-year-at-mossvale-park-2017-pt-1/

I guess my point is that photography and in this new age of videography, it's all about story telling. So whether you plan to or not, try to think about what you're doing always with a story in mind. It does make you think differently when you lift that camera to your eye.
