Hard drive unable to be formatted?

I pulled a 1 TB hard drive from a new laptop (I replaced it with an SSD) and now I'm trying to install Linux on that drive on an Intel Nuc. The drive contains a fresh, unconfigured Windows 10.

Somewhere in the Linux install, it tells me that it is unable to format the drive. It gives me no error codes or reasons.

Obviously this is seems to be far too little information to go on, but can anyone suggest what might be the problem here? Or at least, further avenues for investigation?
