Shutter Speed Synch/Flash Question

I have just recently starting shooting with a non-TTL off-camera flash, triggered by a radio transmitter-receiver set.

I found my manual off-camera flash was able to illuminate my subject just fine up to 1/800 sec shutter speed, and not beyond that speed.

I thought I had read somewhere that 1/250 sec shutter speed is about as fast a shutter as one could expect, for synching with a flash, so I'm wondering, which shutter speeds are considered a normal range for flash synch?

Thanks in advance for your answers..!
