In the first place, you said:

That is not a metering mode. That is a focus mode.

It is not good practice to use spot metering unless you have a relatively uniform area to meter, and you know what tonality you wish to have in that area. In Zone System terms, you "place the metered area on Zone [pick a Roman numeral]". You can  use the EC dial to place the spot.

Failing to do this will result in -- guess what -- inconsistent exposures.
