Reading shutter actuations using image stored in SD card?

Hi

(Until today) In order for me to find out the shutter actuations, I connect my camera to my computer (via. USB) and use a program named "Shutter Count".

I recently upgraded to 5D Mark IV and would like to sell my 5D Mark III.  So I brought it to a local store to find out how much I could sell it for.  To my surprise, one of the persons at the store tried to find out the # of shutter actuations by taking a picture, taking the SD card (where the image was stored) to inside and then later told me the # of actuations.

Is finding out the # of shutter actuations this way valid?

Thanks

Duy
