Why are shutter speeds selectable on dials?

Hi people,

please don't think I want to antagonize anybody here but I really am surprised to see that cameras like the X-T20 have manually selectable shutter speeds on the dial. I do not know if this is a Fuji thing (have just now started to become interested in the X-T20). I suppose it was standard in the days of film cameras but is there anybody who uses this and how? Just to avoid using the menu in shutter priority mode? Or am I missing something? I don't suppose it's a nostalgic quirk.
