Sensor wars and upcoming PowerShot G's

Thom Hogan has some excellent articles, recently he's discussed sensor wars between Nikon and Sony with Nikon using Sony's fabs, but not their designs which are purportedly withheld for predetermined period by Sony for competitive advantage.

Interestingly enough, the upcoming rumored G1X III is another departure from the Sony 1" in the G3/5/7/9X series which eschews the Sony 1" in favor of a Canon APS-C; gives Canon back control of their destiny if you will, and gives folks that are after the G1X series what they want; more light/faster equivalence since arguably the niche the G1X serves isn't telephoto like the G3X, or pocket power like the G7/9X, it's low-light all-around power but not pocket-able.

CR was reporting multiple PowerShot G's getting the same APS-C treatment, which I wondered where the G5X II would fit if so; either it'd have to be a lesser lens then the G1X III, or something else. Now the answer is more logical as of this morning... 20MP 1" with DPAF... It smells like another Canon designed chip slapped on a Sony die. Logical. Perhaps that's why the G3/5/7/9X all have that extra something that DXO has noted, better design, wouldn't surprise me.

Interesting moves in terms of sensor wars, and interesting in terms of the future, which the PowerShot G's clearly have, even though the iPhone X is clearly a shot across the bow, if not to the head (it has even larger rear camera sensors than it's predecessor, and faster equivalence), of most point and shoots; 1" included.
