So, last night we had some really impressive thunder and lightning in the Bay Area. And the power went out.

My UPS which worked well a few weeks ago during a scheduled outage for the utility to replace a transformer down the street did not fair so well this time. It wouldn't even power my modem for a few mins.

I guessed a battery problem but the "replace battery" indicator only came on after significantly messing around with the thing this morning. The battery is just over 5 years old so that's not unreasonable. The unit is 15 or 20 years old and given its failure to detect poor battery charge until well after the event, I'm inclined to think it may be time to replace the whole thing.

Current unit is an APC SmartUPS 1000.

It seems to boil down to a battle between APC and CyberPower, specifically:

What say you guys?

I went through the same kind of  'replacement' process a few years ago and ended up with an APC 650 UPS - which I've been very satisfied with.

Before you make a decision, I suggest that you investigate some of the details regarding the type of sine wave generated with both units. I would also call APC directly and ask their tech department questions. I did that and it cleared up a lot for me.
