SL1 shutter sticks

A couple of weeks ago, my son was using my SL1 at a road race.  He kept getting weird, very dark exposures, and eventually the camera displayed a temperature warning a couple of times.  Once the warning showed up, the camera stopped working and a battery pull would be needed before it would restart.

Later in the day, he was again having problems with failing shots - generally when the shutter speed was on the slow side - 60-125.  I took a look at it when it hung up, and the shutter was stuck about halfway open.  I gently pushed the plastic frame up and it would close and go back to normal for a while.  It seemed to work fine at higher shutter speeds.

The camera has somewhere around 50k shutter actuations, so maybe it is nearing the end of its service life?  Funny thing is, I have shot about a thousand photos with it since (I use it for work), and have had no problem whatsoever!

Is there a way to test the shutter, or lubricate the mechanism?
