Reverse adapter + manual lens not able to focus

I had to sell my beautiful vintage macro lens for financial reasons and do sometimes still need to take a macro photograph, so I got a reverse-mounting lens adapter as a cheap compromise.  I was planning on using it with a vintage M42 mount Fujinon 55mm f/2.2 lens.  This lens mounts on the camera body (Fuji X-T1, APS-C crop sensor) with no issues, but I can't find any subject distance at which the resulting image is sharp at all.  Stopping the aperture down helps bring some of the image in focus, but it still not the correct behavior I was expecting.

On the contrary, my Fujifilm X lenses work just fine in reverse orientation, with the exception of inability to control aperture size.

Is the issue I am having with the Fujinon 55mm f/2.2 lens due to it being made to project onto film farther away?  I've tried removing the lens from the camera and moving it back and forth to see if I could find focus, but that didn't work either.

Any tips on making this combination work, if it's possible?

(I do have a fully manual lens made for Fuji X mount--Mitakon 35mm f/0.95, but I need to get a 52mm-55mm step-up ring before I can use my reverse adapter with it).
