Yup; EOS M / EF-M products are replaced, not repaired. Probably cheaper to replace then repair them as I suspect at-cost, they're inexpensive to make IE high profit. Cheaper to replace then repair. It's like USB cables, they may cost $20, but they cost less than $0.25 to make (I know from having sold them in the past they are literally that margin). Why repair a $0.25? You don't, you replace it. Same here, it's probably a $100 or less camera, they just said, replace.

Regarding the nature of the failure, yes, probably a short. The irony is, both you and Canon may be right, the board may have failed after the short. In either event, fixing the short, would require a board replacement, if, they were to fix it.
