I took the new SL2 + 400mm 5.6 + 1.4 extender + 18 stops solar filter for a spin.
The SL2 flip screen was a neck saver for almost 3 hours.
We had 80% coverage of sun today north of the path of totality.
This image was taken at 2:31pm when max. coverage occurred.

Nice shots!!!! I have the same combo, but opted to shoot the partial with my 5d mk IV. They are good, I have no complaints about them, but I wondered if I could have gotten as good or better shots with my new SL2. From your experience, I think I could have.
Selene,
Love to see your images.
I think technically 5dmkIV is superior to SL2 in every respect ....... except it does not have a flip screen. And the SL2 is light, very light.
While taking eclipse images, I assume you are pointing your lens around 60 degrees (altitude).
I found it very awkward and neck/body straining working the display screen for hours. This is where the flip display screen of the SL2 is godsend. I am very comfortable working the live view and focus (manually) looking down. Working my gimbal tripod head tracking the sun as it sailed across the screen every 2 minutes is a pleasure ...... looking DOWN ...... for almost 3 hours, and close to 1,000 shots.
The flip screen is one critical reason I can take time to focus properly in comfort without torturing my neck and body for 3 hours. After the event yesterday, the SL2 will become my point and shoot travel camera. Really like it.
I am normally not a fan of flip screen, but open mind enough to understand there is a reason it is popular. I am the beneficiary yesterday.
P.S. I found the position of the flip out screen blocked the remote release cable jack in the configuration yesterday. I have to use shutter 2 second delay instead ..... not something worth complaining about for this rare occasion.
Best,
Peter
