24-70 f2.8 alternative?

Looking at options to improve the low light shooting with my 6D, and one would be to improve my normal zoom lens. I currently have the 24-105 STM, which while a decent lens, is not as sharp as the Canon 24-70 lenses and not as fast. The f4 could be an improvement, however, the extra stop of the f2.8 could be critical. My problem (other than price) is that the f2.8 lacks IS.

The Tamron 24-70 f2.8 looks tempting, at half the price of the Canon and with stabilization. However, in reality how good is it compared to the Canon f2.8? If it needs to be stopped down to get decent sharpness, then the Canon f4 could be a better choice. How much variability is there in this lens - Canon are now quite good, but Tamron and Sigma have a history of wide variation in quality.

So, any good comparisons of the Tamron with the two Canon lenses would be appreciated.
