How old are your grandchildren? If they are soon to be playing on a full-size field (usually starts at 12 years old) then you'll likely find a 300mm lens on a full frame camera doesn't give you the reach you really need/want. You'll be doing a lot of cropping. You may want to consider going to a 400mm lens or longer.
