Tips for Shooting a Golf Tournament Needed

I've volunteered to help a non-profit by shooting a golf tournament, and realize now I'm unprepared (think first, act later?).  I'm very comfortable shooting wildlife but this will be new for me.

Since this will be an outdoor event in mid-day light, I'm assuming it would help if I use off-camera light as a fill-in to reduce the extreme contrast - first, is this right? If so, what flash units and settings might be best? I'm a total flash newbie so any direction would be helpful.

Any other things I should be considering? Tips?

Fortunately I have some time to practice before the event.

Thanks for any help!
