Milky Way shot from the Oregon coast with Rokinon 12mm
6

Hi all,

My wife and I just got back from a trip to Portland and the Oregon coast. I'll be sharing more images later in the week/weekend from the trip, but just wanted to share this astro shot with everyone for c&c and to see if anyone had post-processing tips.

Rokinon 12mm f/2 @ f/2, 30 seconds, ISO 1600, processed in ON1

This was my first ever astro shot as Chicago does not lend itself to shooting the Milky Way from within the city. Chicago is a 9 on the Bortle scale, whereas by comparison this location of the coast, Yachats, OR, was a 3.

I used a combination of PlanIt Pro and PhotoPills to help me find the Milky Way center. Both apps offer an augmented reality mode (not pictured), which was really helpful.

When 10:15pm rolled around, I headed back out to the park.  I was pretty nervous being out alone in a near pitch black, unfamiliar environment; my head was on a swivel the whole time (inner-city habit).  The nervousness was likely completely unnecessary considering we were out in a charming little coastal town, but i blame any user-errors on that ;).

Anyway, when framing up the shot, I could see with the naked eye a faint "starry cloud" with where I thought (and the apps backed up) the Milky Way center would be.  After the first exposure came out I was giddy with excitement - as a city dweller this phenomenon is something I had never witnessed.  I believe 30 seconds was a hair too long as most sites recommended 27-28 seconds, so there is some slight star-trailing when viewing 1:1.

Post-processing wise, I'm definitely a minimalist and it's not my strong point. I perused lonelyspeck and clarkvision for some tips, so the resulting shot is what resulted from 10 minutes of tinkering.

Hope y'all enjoy and looking forward to any advice, but it likely won't be until our next trip (Summer 2018) when I can try my hand at astro again.

Cheers,

Jake
