Format or Erase

I noticed that the EM-1.2 has an option to choose between formatting or erasing a memory card. My old Canon only gave me the option to format and I was wondering if there was any reason to erase rather than to format.

As I understand the functionality, an erase only removes the links to the file data so it is unreachable (without searching through the sectors of the disk) while the other rebuilds the pointer table and (I assume) resets the actual data as well. The question is - is there a reason to do one rather than the other?

Presumably there is a limited number of times solid state memory can be accessed before it begins to fail, but is that number low enough to warrant erasing rather than formatting? And, if that number is low, why is there not the same problem with the pointer table failing? Or is that moved around somehow? In any case, I did not mean to get technical.
