55-300PLM focus motor reliability?

Over the weekend I was shooting birds with my K-3ii/55-300PLM combo, when the lens abruptly stopped focusing. I can hear a "whirr" sound when it is trying to focus but the image never changes and nothing I can do will obtain focus. Since the 55-300PLM is a focus-by-wire lens, I currently can't even manually focus with it. And before you ask, yes the camera is in AF mode and the lens is extended.

I immediately swapped lenses to my DA 18-135mm and had no issues focusing. Likewise my 50mm/f1.8, but that's a screw drive lens so not really comparable.

Is my 55-300PLM a "goner", as I suspect? Has anyone else had issues with the focus motor dying?

Thankfully it is still under warranty -  I just bought it in May.
