Replacement for trusty Nikon 28-105 lens

My elderly Nikon 28-105 lens is reaching the end of its life. The zoom mechanism is sticking a bit. I'd like to replace it with a good quality lens for general useage: travel, landscape, architecture etc but not so much for portraits. I was hoping the new Sigma 24-70 Art would be a good option (not too large), but it doesn't seem to be doing well on sharpness in its initial reviews. The Nikon 24-70 f2.8 VR is looking good but I'm a little apprehensive about its size and weight. Other options are the 24-120 f4 VR or the old 24-70G. Can any one offer some good advice? I'd be interested to hear how the image quality of the old 28-105 compares with these modern lenses. My other lenses are the 14-24 f2.8 and the old 80-400 VR.

Thanks for your time.
