I find it quite manageable for travel and to use hand-held in the field. I also use the 100-400 mk2 for a variety of situations and love the lens.
I don't personally use flash but know several people who do.
Hiring a knowlegable guide is a smart move. It can save you a lot of time and effort to learn about different areas and the species that are found in those areas.
