Repairing 3LT Airhed

I've just bought a used 3LT Brian tripod which came with an Airhed 1. The pan function seems really stiff and the knob for adjusting the friction has been broken and doesn't seem to do anything. I'm guessing something is wrong internally and the previous owner broke the knob trying to overtighten it. I'd like to open up the Airhed and see if I can spot what's wrong, but I can't work out how to!

There's a small grub screw on the base of the head, but loosening it doesn't really seem to change anything. The screw tightens the bronze, metallic ring at the bottom against the black plastic ring with angle markings on it, but they both turn together whether or not the grub screw is tight. Has anyone on here taken one of these heads apart before? Any ideas how to?

Thanks

Ben
