Well, the eclipse is almost here. The stuff in the sky (as opposed to the odd things happening at ground level during the eclipse) will be hard to photograph. You really need a quite long lens (more than 1000mm on full-frame) and a solar filter. So, why not try using a cheap superzoom?

Safely Shooting the Sun With the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS is my instructable explaining how, for a total cost under $250, you can safely use this camera to capture pretty decent images of the Sun with about 2.4MP within the Sun's diameter. The camera and solar filter (in 3D-printed holder) looks like this:

The images it captures look like this (which was a quick hand-held test shot!):

Note that you can clearly see the dark spot on the Sun and even a bit of the surface texture (although adding a color filter could give that more contrast).

Anyway, enjoy the eclipse and don't blind yourself nor your camera!
