European Bee-Eaters
3

Bee-Eaters are amongst the most colourful birds in my area and it´s a real joy to watch them in big numbers and hear their never ending chatting. They catch all sorts of insects in flight but as you can see from the pics below they prefer the larger ones if they can get them... presumably because it´s easier for them to successfully raise their offspring when the food portions are bigger.

Due to intensive use of insecticides in agriculture the populations were on the decline and the birds were on the list of endangered species. Within the last decade the demand for organic wine has grown and as a consequence of the reduced usage of insecticides there´s now enough food for the birds and their populations slowly recover.

Thanks for watching! C&C welcome!
