The simply physics of photon noise make it universal advise to gather as much light as possible which means starting with the lowest (normal) ISO setting and raising it only after you have set aperture and exposure time.

I totally agree. I was thinking about my Canon DSLR, where if I don't pay attention to setting the ISO then the shadow areas can end up a bit of a disaster, where someone with the latest Sony sensor might choose different settings knowing they can pull detail from the shadows like one of those magicians pulling rabbits out of a hat.
