Am I (or you) a real photographer?

A thread on the Fujifilm forum at present has prompted me to reflect on what criteria should be met to call oneself a "photographer". Friends and family sometimes ask me to cover an event for them, and I usually say "I'm not a real photographer you know..." But am I? Is this a term that should be reserved for people who sell their work or services, or publicly exhibit, or the enthusiastic amateur with loads of gear, and does it include those with a talent for visual expression and composition but little technical knowledge and maybe using an iphone or point-and-shoot? At what point do I (and you) become "photographers"?

Probably been discussed before, but can't find such a thread in search.
