But since most photos are only viewed on phone screens and shared on WhatsApp/Instagram/Facebook, it's not really a problem. So if you're not doing anything else with the photo's people who claim smartphones are as good as real camera's may be right.

Exactly, it depends on your usage needs.

But what impressed me most was how reactive and well judged the exposure and processing was on the iPhone. It does a lot of image analysis, which is quite impressive.

The sensor has about 9 EV of dynamic range at the most, but it uses all of it effectively when metering. Its really quite 'intelligent' and often produces something that I would need a few minutes to do in ACR.

Sure, I can't push it nearly as far, and at ISO 800 it is truly awful, but you can get away with a lot on iPad size images.
