Color, lenses, price, long term commitment
1
I had a decision to make this week. I used a canon 5d for several years (succeeding 10d, G3, EOS30 film body, EOS 300 film body in a multi year upgrade path). I have a complete set of Canon EF Lenses (200L, 24-105L, 17-40L, 100macro, 85, 50, 35), 2 Canon flashes. I practically waited for the 6D mk.II but during my latest hiking holiday when I read with disappointment that the 6D mk.II sensor doesn't have the AD converter on chip I also realised that I really want a smaller and lighter setup for my usual topic of travel, street and family photography.
So I started to screen mirrorless alternatives and I recognize that this is a point where many seem to turn their back on Canon. I looked at what Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and Fuji have to offer versus Canon offering. Since I am not interested in 4k Video and I am not impressed with the lens selection from Sony (Zeiss seems to be really just a marketing feature and the quality is mostly nothing near from what I would expect from this otherwise great optics firm), I also didn't want to downgrade to a smaller sensor than APS-C, therefore no micro 4/3 for me. Fuji X-T20 was most tempting for their beautiful lens lineup, but then cost/quality relation comes back into play. Canon has just many more high quality lenses at lower prices than Fuji. And as a matter of fact I already own most of the ones I need and want. Also I always liked the color rendition of Canon cameras. So it was an easy decision in the end to get another Canon body (in my case the EOS M5) and snap away happily with a newly bought EF-M 22/2 as well as adapted EF 200, 100, 85, 50, 35 which all work like a charm on the M5 body.
I couldn't be happier with my decision. The zoom lenses of the EF-M system are not that convincing except for the 11-22 maybe, but since I like to use fast primes anyway I have saved more than the price of the M5 by not having to buy the Fuji lenses. And I trust in Canons long term commitment to offer me future upgrades to their bodies so that I will eventually always find a way to put my good old lenses to work.
