Sorry to dig up an old thread, but Canon are still advertising their cheaper models as Wi-Fi certified and I am in the process of taking them to task on this issue as I and apparently most of the posters on this thread as well as on other sites agree that the use of the Wi-Fi Certified logo is misleading customers into the assumption that a connection with a PC or Mac would be possible. I may go into some detail below as to where I`m at with my case and what possible outcomes I would like to see.
But first I would like to say how pleased I am that I am not alone in thinking this is not on and how grateful I am that people have posted more than one possible workaround.
I have been exchanging many emails with Canon UK support for a couple of weeks now. I feel I have nearly exhausted this approach and have now contacted Trading Standards, the Advertising Standards Authority (both in the UK) and the Wi-Fi Alliance, whom are the issuers of the Wi-Fi Certified logo and certificates. I am awaiting a final word from all three, but have had a discussion with the alliance that have said " We do certify the devices for interoperability. These should connect to any Wi-Fi CERTIFIED device without question."
My main problem is that by using the logo and stating in Canons advertising "Wi-Fi Certified, Share your images and control your camera over Wi-Fi" it is only natural to assume given that my home network is also "Wi-Fi" certified, that at the very least a connection to allow transfer of data would be possible. Also the software package for a PC that is presented upon entering the model and serial number for the device contains the EOS Utility version that only works with Wi-Fi, further adding to my assumptions that this must be possible.
So far Canons response has been that I "should have read the manual", this is absurd, who in their right mind reads a product manual before settling on a purchase? Not many would care to read a manual after a purchase! It would have only taken a slight rewording of the advertising at point of sale to make clear that a wireless connection is limited to certain devices.
I would like Canon to at the very least change their advertising, but ideally release a firmware patch to allow such connections, although from reading some of the previous posts, it seems there may indeed be hardware issues preventing this.
